SYC hosts high-performance camp

During the week of 1-7 July ten young sailors, aged 10-13, are attending a high-performance sailing camp, which forms part of an advanced training programme.

Each of these youngsters is one of South Africa’s best and most skilled junior sailors, and taking part in this camp will only improve their skills even further, while five of them will attend the Optimist African Championships in the Seychelles from 25 August to 1 September.

Sailing can be done in many different forms, and one of them is to sail on a dinghy, which is exactly what this high-performance camp is all about.

During the week the youngsters were taught to master the art of sailing in the rugged ocean while “being the captain of their own ship”.

Simply put, the difference between a dinghy and a sailing boat is that a dinghy is much smaller, with a wooden centre board and no lead keels or fins in comparison to the larger sailboats.

Elisa Falcon from Cape Town, one of the 10 young sailors, described this experience as “exciting, but at times difficult and challenging due to the harsh weather conditions”.

This skilful and knowledgeable group of youngsters is also being trained by Diego Pontes, an experienced sailor all the way from Portugal and a member of the Viana Sailing team, as well as by Michael Kavanagh, chairperson of the Western Cape Optimist Association.

Steve McComb from the Saldanha Bay Yacht Club, says they are delighted to host this training event and that they are looking forward to hosting many more exciting and exhilarating events in future.
