Using holidays to promote gymnastics

The Saldanha Bay Gymnastics Hub recently lent their support towards various communities around the West Coast in an effort to keep kids off the streets during the school holidays and to help inspire and educate the youth about gymnastics, from Monday 25 June to Tuesday 26 June.

“As part of our efforts to make gymnastics more accessible to all our communities, we joined various groups, such as the West Coast Community Church, FDSA Youth Centre and the Diazville Primary MOD Centre, which were presenting holiday programmes in Saldanha Bay, Diazville and Velddrif,” says owner of Saldanha Gymnastics Melvin Edwards.

Saldanha Gymnastics also invited world champion rope skipper Sibo Sodo, to assist the hub in its objectives.

“From the first moment he set foot at our first stop, the FDSA Youth Centre in Noordhoek, he was a hit,” said Edwards of Sodo.

“We played games with the kids, then Sodo showed off some of his talents, and then we started coaching rope skipping and tumbling.” Afterwards, Saldanha Gymnastics donated double dutch ropes to the centre and presented some of the youngsters with their own high-speed competition ropes.

“On day 2 we joined the West Coast Community Church in Saldanha Bay at its holiday club,” Edwards continued. “Once again it was a huge success, even the pastor’s wife jumped in. From there we moved to the community of Diazville and met the holiday club kids at the Diazville Primary MOD Centre.”

He explained that here games were played to promote self-confidence, teamwork, with rope skipping demonstrations thrown in, in which coaching was also offered.

“I believe we should fill our children’s world with enough activities to keep them away from drugs and the other evils that can draw them in so easily.

“I would like to thank FDSA, the West Coast Community Church and Diazville Primary for allowing us to be part of their programmes,” said Edwards.
