Wader Bash birding weekend in West Coast Park

The popular annual birding weekend Wader Bash will take place from 14 to 16 February in the West Coast National Park.

The weekend is arranged by the SANParks Honorary Rangers: West Coast Region.

Two internationally renowned bird experts, Dr Giselle Murison and Vernon Head, will present interesting lectures the Sunday.

Murison has been the Western Cape Estuaries Conservation Project Manager for BirdLife South Africa since 2015. She started her academic career at UCT. Her MSc topic at the FitzPatrick Institute was about mapping birding and biodiversity hot spots as well as the importance of the estuary of the Berg River.

“Her PhD (ecology and environmental management) from the University of East Anglia in the UK has enabled her to focus on the environmental issues facing the estuaries in the Western Cape,” explains Liana van Aswegen, from the SANParks Honorary Rangers: West Coast Region. “She is an excellent birder.”

On Sunday morning Murison will talk about the importance of the Berg River Estuary and other estuaries in the Western Cape.

Vernon Head currently serves as one of the directors for BirdLife. He is also a member of the advisory board of the Fitzpatrick Institute at UCT.

“He is also a UCT architectural graduate, winning many national and international architectural and design awards,” Van Aswegen says. “He is currently the principal architect at a well-known architectural firm in Cape Town.”

“Birding is not only Vernon’s hobby, but also his passion,” says Van Aswegen. “He has been a keen birder since childhood and is well-known internationally for his birding expeditions.”

His first book, The Search for the Rarest Bird in the World (2014), put him on a career of writing – not only prose, but also poetry – elevating him into best-seller and award winning status.

A Tree for the Birds (novel based on his travels up the Congo River) and The Laughing Dove and other Poems will be available to purchase on the day.

Head will talk about his books.

Both these speakers will provide a fitting end to the fun-filled #WaderBash2020 birding weekend. Although the Saturday programme of the event is fully booked, anyone interested in birding topics may attend the free informative lectures on Sunday at the Geelbek Stables at 09:00.
