World Animal Day

Families and animal lovers are encouraged to spend a fun-filled day with Langebaan Animal Care (LAC) in honour of World Animal Day (WAD) on Friday 4 October at the Langebaan Skate Park.

According to Izelle Marallich, chairperson of the LAC, on WAD one should focus attention on the furry and scaly living things that inhabit this globe with us.

“This day is not about pointing to all that we have done to damage the natural world; rather, it is about honouring all the living, breathing critters that sleep under the same skies as us; most importantly, it is about deciding that we want them in our future.”

She adds that the origins of WAD date back to the 1920’s when Heinrich Zimmermann, publisher and editor of Mensch und Hund (Man and Dog), organised a day’s celebration in recognition of animal welfare and the need to eradicate animal cruelty.

“He recognised that there was a huge gap in how animals are perceived the world over. They’re respected and revered in some nations while misused and abused in others. One does not have to venture too far down any news feed to see how much animals have had to endure just this year alone.”

She also mentions that the South African National Park’s board will be joining the day to provide a brief talk and that the shelter dog fashion show will be one of the highlights of the evening.

Pet owners are also encouraged to enter their pets in LAC’s competition where their animals will be judged in various categories.

There will be many great prizes up for grabs such as the best dressed animal, best owner and animal lookalike, cleverest animal and much more.

Live music and tasty treats such as curry, hot chocolate and Russian rolls will also be available on the day. Entries are valued at R20 per person and the event starts at 17:30 and will continue until 21:00. For more information contact Izelle Marallich at 083 790 0653.
