Top End Drags at airstrip

The upcoming Saldanha 800 m Top End Drags is sure to be another exciting racing event not to be missed, on Friday 30 November and Saturday 1 December.

The drags will take place at the Saldanha airstrip this year.

Weslander asked Grant Steenveld, the Saldanha Drags event organiser, what visitors can expect this year.

He says the idea is for each event to be an improvement on the last, and to bring something new to the table.

“At the previous event we introduced 400-metre ‘night drags’, although it was a timed event,” explained Steenveld.

“This time around all the entries for Friday will be entered into the same classes as per the main event.”

He added that entries were still open for the Friday night 400-metre event.

According to Steenveld, the drags are growing in popularity, and it had more than 8 000 spectators last year, and there was a reasonable degree of confidence that more spectators would attend this year.

He added that, for safety reasons and time constraints, entries are limited to 200, from different parts of South Africa and beyond.

“Last year we saw Stellios Sissou piloting his NXGEN GTR35 to an astonishing 324 km/h over the 800 metres,” said Steenveld referring to last year’s champion who currently holds the top speed record at Saldanha.

He adds that Garrion Slamat had the fastest bike, a Suzuki Hyabusa, which finished at a lightning speed of

320,8 km/h last year.

Steenveld also makes special mention of the NXGEN Crew with their amazing machines that will be attending the event all the way from Johannesburg.

The gates will open at 17:00 on Friday 30 November.

Entry fees are as follows: adults R150, children aged 6 to 12: R50, and children under 6 years old have free entry.
