Top End Drags this weekend

The smells and sounds of burning rubber and thunderous engines will soon fill the air as the 800 m Top End Drags make its much anticipated return.

The event, hosted by West Coast Racing, takes place at Saldanha’s airstrip on Friday 29 November and Saturday 30 November.

According to Grant Steenveld, organiser, last year’s event was attended by just over 8 000 spectators.

“The event is growing in popularity year on year; we definitely expect to see that number increase with this year’s event.”

He adds that this year the drags will be more or less similar in set-up.

“The patron experience has changed with a dedicated VIP area that caters for competitors, sponsors, guests and a limited number to general public.”

He also mentions that the drags will consist of a 400-metre night racing event the Friday night and 800-metre racing the Saturday.

Last year’s action was packed with unforgettable and record breaking moments such as Stellios Sissou, dubbed the “King of Saldanha Drags”, shattering his previous record which was 324 km/h over 800 metres in his Nissan GTR, with a breathtaking speed of 348.3 km/h.

“He will unfortunately not be attending, but sure to be at the event will be Ernest Roberts in his NXGEN GTR 35 to make his challenge on the record.”

In the bikes category, he said: “Garrion Slamat, the record holder on his Suzuki Hayabusa with a blistering speed of 320,8 km/h, will try and better his personal best with a newly built Suzuki Hayabusa gen 2 Turbo.”

He adds that due to safety reasons and time constraints they have a total of 150 entries for this event from all over South Africa and across the borders.

“We would like to thank Saldanha Bay Municipality (SBM), that includes the traffic and law enforcement departments, as well as Provincial Traffic for their assistance in making this event possible.”

Gates open at 17:00 on Friday with the main event starting at 09:00 on Saturday.

Entry fees are as follows: adults R150, children aged 6 to 12: R50, and children under 6 years old have free entry.

Tickets are available at Computicket.

There will also be a beer garden on site.
