Vredenburg Tennis Club (VTC) are a force to be reckoned with.
All members of VTC competing in the doubles during the Western Province Open tennis tournament held in Cape Town ended up in the Top 5 of their respective age groups.
The top achiever was Marquin Strauss who won the men’s double (MD 30) with his partner John Burton, also a VTC member. They defeated Prins/Van Niekerk 6-1, 6-3 in the finals.
Strauss also played in the men’s single (MS 30) and was defeated by the number 1, Andre Janse van Rensburg 3-6, 0-6.
In the mixed doubles (MD 40) VTC grabbed second, fourth and fifth places. Gerda-Mare Botha and her partner Hannes du Toit from Free State lost the finals in 3 sets 4-6, 7-5 and 7-10 against [4] Dorrington/Booth.
The first and third seeds also represented VTC.
Mosepedi Manaka (VTC) and Fahmie Ariefdien (1) lost the third/fourth place play-off against [2] Fransman/Cloete 5-7, 3-6. Brian Barnard (3)/Karin Viljoen from VTC ended in the fifth position.
Botha and Manaka also competed in the WS 45. Botha (4) lost against Ronel Pieterse (2) 1-6, 3-6 and took the fourth place while Manaka was beaten by Annerie Louw 1-6, 3-6.
VTC once again ruled the 50s. Warrick Dreyer (4) lost in the finals against the number 1 Anthony Mills 2-6, 0-6.
In an epic match that lasted almost four hours Barnard won his match. Barnard was trailing 1-5 in the first set and was 0-4 down in the second before beating Llewellyn Aylesbury 7-5, 6-7 (4-7), 10-7 (Super Tie-break).
Dreyer and Barnard (MD 50) ended third and fifth respectively in the men’s doubles. The first seeds, Dreyer/De Beer lost in a tough 3-setter against Pfaff/Van der Merwe 1-6, 6-4, 11-9. Barnard/Burger ended fifth. Ladies singles (LS 55) Karin Viljoen ended fifth.
