West Coast chess champs crowned

West Coast Chess held two big chess tournaments over the weekend of 27 to 29 April at Masiphatisane, Vredenburg. The two tournaments were the Freedom Day Blitz Tournament and the West Coast Open Chess tournament.

The weekend started with a rated Freedom Day Blitz tournament, which is a competition where the rating of a player may increase or decrease depending on their performance, which is also decided by Chess South Africa.

At this tournament, the players had to show their skills over a time control of five minutes each, to determine the winner of the Blitz tournament. A total of 99 players took part in the blitz, with 60 players in the men’s section and 39 in the women’s section.

In the end, it was Calvin Cloete from Uitkyk Pioneers, Lutzville who won first place, Jacques Basson from Kasparov-Fisher, in Saldanha Bay came second and Relancho January from Uitkyk Pioneers, achieved the third place.

The women’s section was dominated by Legene Malleta from Uitkyk Pioneers, who achieved first place, with Jamie-Lee Michaels from Deep Blue, Vredenburg achieving second place and Anne-Belle Ellman from Deep Blue, came third.

A total of 95 players participated in the West Coast Open Chess Tournament. The champion of the Prestige section, was Granville Cloete from Uitkyk Pioneers, who won five of his six games and in second place was Jacques Basson from Kasparov Fisher, winning four out of six, and third was Relancho January of Uitkyk Pioneers, winning four out of six. The C Section was won by Jamie-Lee Mitchells, from Deep Blue, who won five out of six, Shaundre Lewaks of Mittal Steel in Vredenburg came second with a total of 4½ out of 6.

Legene Malletta of Uitkyk Pioneers also came third, with 4½ out of 6. The champion of the D Section was Joel Lawrence of Mittal Steel, and Andrea Lewaks (Mittal Steel) was second and Imma Mangwana from Masiphatisane achieved third place.
