Do not vote for the lesser of two evils, vote your choice

On 8 May millions of voters will go to the polls without knowing how South Africa’s electoral system allocates seats and why there is no such thing as a wasted vote.

It is frightening that so few people understand the proportional representation system, which we use here in South Africa.

This system creates a multi-party democracy in which people are free to vote for any party, however big or small. The system ensures minority voices are heard and it prevents the corrosive two-party system prevalent in the USA and UK.

The system benefits small parties and aims to give them power to hold bigger parties to account.

Parties continue to lie to voters in streams of SMSes, that voting for a small party is a “wasted vote”.

All research indicates that the electorate are largely ill-informed and believe these lies.

The media, the electoral commission and government, are failing in their duty to inform voters of what exactly they are voting for and the choices they can exercise without any fear.

The proportional representation system allows each citizen to vote for a party that best represents their interests.

Voters should Google this to find out more and not be subjected to fear mongering that they are forced to vote for the lesser of two evils.
