Baby boy’s murderer sentenced to 25 years

On Friday 28 June, after a lengthy investigation, the High Court found Reginald Bezuidenhoud (36) guilty of murdering his girlfriend’s child.

Almost a year ago, on Sunday 9 September 2018, the police were alerted by Worcester Hospital about an 18 month-old baby boy that had fallen from the bed and was declared brain dead at the time.

The investigation was led by two investigating officers, Sgt Revah Readien and Const Johan Saayman who visited Worcester Hospital after the call.

Following a preliminary investigation it was revealed that the baby had visible head injuries associated with assault. The baby boy was later declared dead at the hospital due to head injuries.

According to the local police spokesperson, Capt Lindikhaya Mkhontwana, they had suspicions that the baby was murdered. “It was later found that the baby boy’s skull was cracked, his ribs were broken and the boy had bruises all over his face and body,” adds Mkhontwana.

With the scant evidence the two investigating officers had, they were able to build a strong case against the perpetrator.

“Three days after the incident was reported, a suspect, Reginald Bezuidenhoud was arrested,” says Mkhontwana.

It was then discovered that Bezuidenhoud was in a relationship with the mother of the deceased. The case was later transferred to the High Court in Cape Town.

Bezuidenhoud was sentenced to 25 years imprisonment by the High Court Judge Andre le Grange.

Le Grange commended the two investigating officers for the sterling work they had done. “He further mentioned that if it was not for the two detectives who acted quickly in this matter, this case would have been in the statistics of unsolved murders,” says Mkhontwana.

The Station Commander of Worcester SAPS, Brigadier Vuyani Mdimbaza thanked the members for ensuring that a “merciless criminal” was put behind bars for a long time.
