Brother and sister die in horror Ashton shack fire

On Saturday 20 June, police and rescue services in Ashton responded to a house that was on fire. Two siblings died in the horrific accident.

Around 20:45 a six year old girl and her three-year-old brother burned to death in a shack behind the main house in Olien Street.

“It is alleged that the father left the mother and the two children to go and ask neighbours for a candle because the one that was burning had reached its end. The candle and flame became smaller and apparently burnt out. The mother then also left the children unattended to go and search for a candle due to the fact that it took longer than expected for the father to return,” WO Sylvester Joseph told Standard.

While searching for a candle and for the father, the mother was informed by people in the street that the shack was on fire.

“The two children were sleeping inside when the incident occurred. After the fire was put out, the bodies of the two children were recovered and were transported to forensics in Worcester where a postmortem was completed. More details will be revealed as the inquest will be completed,” WO Joseph said.

Standard tried to contact the parents on a cellphone number provided, but at time of going to print the cellphone only went to voicemail services.
