Cakes for the community

The Worcester Islamic Society’s (WIS) events committee held a community-driven cake sale as a fundraiser to help with construction and repairs to the mosque.

“Community members donated different sorts of cakes,” said WIS member Lameez Omardien. “We take the donations and make platters, which then get sold individually.” The proceeds go towards the upkeep of the mosque.

According to Jameel Scheepers, executive member of WIS, the mosque is still under construction and the monthly fundraisers are only enough to cover monthly expenses.

The ambitious WIS has a development plan, that of enlarging the mosque so it can be easily accessible and accommodate more of the faithful.

“We would like to invite the community to come along and see what we are doing,” Scheepers said.

The WIS fundraiser is a regular initiative, which takes place every three months. The society also has weekly food sales on Fridays. “People do not realise that every drop of water costs money, and funds have to come in, in one way or another,” says Gadidja Jordaan.

An enthusiastic community member, Jesmine Valentine, said baking is her passion and getting to bake for a good cause brings forth a different type of contentment in her heart.

Omardien says she would like to motivate youngsters to come along and volunteer.

“We are getting older by the day; the youth are after all the future,” she says.

The events committee will host a Women’s Day programme on 31 August, where they will tackle spousal abuse. The programme is free of charge, but RSVP is essential. To RSVP or for any additional information, contact 023 346 4026 or at wisislam.soc@gmail.com.
