Call 082 379 6031 for Zwele

Zwelethemba residents are frustrated as they can still not contact their police station on a landline after telephone cables were stolen three months ago.

Zweletans have to walk to the police station to lodge complaints because of faulty telephone lines.

“The fact that we are unable to get the police to react on emergencies as soon as possible is frustrating,” says Wandile Ndamoyi, a concerned resident.

Ndamoyi also added that he is worried that crime in the community is on the rise. “We already have a problem with crime in Zwelethemba and now with the broken telephone lines it complicates everything.”

Capt Soyiso Mantyi, station commander of the Zwelethemba police station, says the problem has been solved. “Systems have been put in place. There is a cellphone number that residents can dial to get help.”

Police spokesperson, Captain Lindikhaya Mkhontwana, confirmed that telephone lines at Zwelethemba Police station are not working due to the theft of the main telephone box supply and that the matter has been reported to the authorities.

The community is urged to dial 082 379 6031 in case of an emergency.

Mandisi Nelani, chairperson of the Community Policing Forum(CPF) emphasised the importance of attending Imbizo’s.

“If only the community could react to the Imbizo’s that are called, they would have known that there is a cell phone number that they can dial to reach the police station. The number is also available at the police station.”
