Centre for people with disabilities opened

The Breede Valley Association for Persons with Disabilities (APD) launched a day care for adults with disabilities.

At the launch on Tuesday 3 December, CEO Louine Griesel said: “Today, a long-time dream of the mamas of Worcester is being realised, creating a safe, stimulating environment for young adults with profound intellectual disabilities over the age of 18.”

The Partners for Life Adult Care Centre will provide daily stimulating activities to adults, young and old, at their facility on the corner of Grey and Kerkhof streets. The launch coincided with the last day of the month-long Disability Awareness Month. The theme for the last week of this drive was “Social cohesion and safe communities: Growing a disability inclusive and safe South Africa together”. This coincided with International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

The centre will, for now, share a space with the arts and crafts group at the APD, but in the long term it would like to renovate its garage space.

Griesel focused on the inclusivity of people with disabilities, and what this new endeavour will provide in terms of fulfilling this objective.

“There is no better way to celebrate the inclusiveness of people with disabilities than advocacy performed in their interests, whether by them themselves or on their behalf,” she said. “And the hope, inspiration and cohesion that all South Africans derive from such work is perfectly expressed in the Partners for Life Adult Care Centre.”
