Children of Tulbagh will receive meal at local school

From now on almost 227 learners in Tulbagh will receive breakfast at school.

The Tigerbrands Foundation, which is committed to giving learners from less privileged communities a nutritious bowl of porridge at schools, recently joined hands with Montrouge Primary School.

Principal Bonita Simpson said she is elated by the breakfast initiative, which will be implemented from 2 April, the beginning of the new term.

“Our school is currently part of the education department’s feeding scheme, but we look forward to introducing new porridges to the learners,” she said.

Learners at the school are largely from the rural areas surrounding the school and their parents work on farms.

“We provide 15 schools in the Western Cape with ‘in school’ breakfasts,” Terence de Wet, regional coordinator of Tigerbrand Foundation, pointed out.

“This means we give learners a warm cooked breakfast five days a week. The reasoning behind this is that we want to serve this breakfast with dignity. How we do this is by serving breakfast in class on a nice place mat and a spoon under an educators’ supervision.”

According to De Wet, their initiative must also operate as a vehicle for learning life lessons.

“Learners should learn table manners, the importance and benefits of healthy nutrition and values,” he said.

“In the province we reach about 5 000 learners in schools. He hopes the government can help with a future vision to reach learners across the country in providing them with breakfast and lunch.

De Wet said his foundation also adds an additional R550 to the stipend of all workers serving breakfast to learners at schools, which is another way of contributing to job creation.
