Lanner House gives back for 67 minutes...

Lanner House Independent School saw fit to play its part on Mandela Day, celebrated on Saturday 18 July, by treating elderly people at Tuindorp Retirement Village in Worcester.

“At the beginning of the third term we realised how significant Mandela Day was for our school, and we brainstormed how we were going to celebrate it despite the Covid-19 pandemic,” event coordinator and Lanner House preschool teacher Naola de Ruiters said.

She and head of department at the preschool at Lanner House Mariana Viljoen came up with an idea of warming the hearts of their immediate neighbours with some delicacies.

“It was important for us to show them that we care about them,” De Ruiters said, “and thanks to the donations that poured in through our parents and learners the day was a tremendous success due to these wonderful gestures.”

Bearing the Covid-19 pandemic in mind, especially the high risk it posed for elderly people, the Lanner House management, with principal Davin Lehy, decided learners should not go along and social distancing protocols must be adhered to. Only a few staff members went along and handed the packages over.

Tuindorp Retirement Village was “excited” and “appreciative” of the gesture from Lanner House, seeing its coordinators as agents of hope and love for its residents.

A total of 52 packets filled with scrumptious treats such as sweets, biscuits, slabs of chocolate, mini chocolate bars, nuts, raisins, fruit flakes and chocolate peanuts were distributed.

“As a school we believe giving back to the community creates a healthy understanding for our learners, that giving back is part of the Christian ideals we stand for,” De Ruiters said. “It also helps to create a well-rounded learner, and the understanding that education is given with a difference.”
