Local authorities join forces to create awareness

The Government Communications and Information Service (GCIS), in partnership with Department of Correctional Services, police, provincial and local traffic as well as the community development workers, hosted two integrated activities on Friday (28 August) in Worcester.

South Africa moved to Alert Level 2 of the national lockdown at midnight on 17 August 2020, yet specific restrictions highlighted in the President’s speech are still in place to minimise the spread of the coronavirus.

With the potential of a second wave, President Cyril Ramaphosa urged citizens to maintain the hygiene protocols of washing and sanitising of hands, observing social distancing and wearing masks

“One other activity was an integrated roadblock, where information was distributed to motorists on the protocols of Covid-19 as well as on gender-based violence, another was the painting of a wall depicting the wearing of a mask, washing of hands as well as keeping a social distance,” government spokesperson Peter Titus said.

The painting was done by inmates of the Worcester Correctional Centre’s Group of Hope.

Said Titus: “It is indeed important for government to ensure that all citizens is kept on high alert about the protocols of Covid-19 to ensure that we curb the increase of deaths because of Covid 19.”

He said liaison would be done across the Breede Valley District with the move into Heritage and Tourism Month, to ensure communities are mobilised to use local tourist attractions to try and stimulate the market, as the impact of Covid-19 on the tourism sector was devastating, and maintaining jobs in this sector is paramount.
