Oral history initiative launched in Valley

An oral history initiative that aims to capture and preserve the unique stories of communities within the Western Cape was recently launched.

On 15 October, the Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Anroux Marais, officially launched the Oral History Initiative in the Breede Valley Municipality in Worcester.

“Much of the history of our communities is preserved only in the minds of their storytellers. To truly understand our past from a unique perspective, this programme aims to record the valuable experiences beneath our social tapestry. While promoting social inclusion through sharing our stories, we can also ensure that personal histories and experiences are kept alive in communities and within government so that future generations can celebrate their heritage,” said Marais during her keynote address.

Since its launch in 2015, the project has reached 23 communities across all six districts of the province, documenting 263 valuable interviews for posterity.

The library service of the Breede Valley Municipality, a partner in the project, identified the storytellers and assisted with arrangements for the launch. The Breede Valley community can now borrow the recorded interviews at the libraries in Worcester, De Doorns, Rawsonville, Touwsrivier and Zwelethemba.

Marais calls on each citizen in the Western Cape to share their stories at their local participating libraries and wholeheartedly thanks all storytellers for sharing their oral histories with the department.
