Partners in development

Kleinplasie and Change Makers in Worcester signed a memorandum of understanding to further social cohesion and community development.

The partnership, signed on 25 October, has been marked as a step in the right direction for the multi-cultural tourism facility Kleinplasie to make a lasting difference in the lives of those in need.

“The leadership of Kleinplasie decided to go into partnership with Change Makers to live up to its mandate of being a place for the community and tourist hub,” explains Orton King, CEO of the Mega Group, the holding company Kleinplasie falls under. “The facility has been split into two sections, one where we are running the business side of Kleinplasie and the other where we dedicate facilities to community development.”

The memorandum specifies in detail the objectives Kleinplasie and Change Makers, which draws people away from gangs and drugs, are setting out to achieve through their partnership. These include the promotion of social capital, economic growth and development of disadvantaged areas in Worcester. The focus is especially on young men looking to break free from addiction and crime.

“We at the Change Makers try to rehabilitate people who struggle to break free from addiction and crime,” says Muriel Heradien, programme manager at Change Makers. “The programme has three levels, where we focus on developing the individual to make them active and responsible members of society. The partnership with Kleinplasie will add a new sphere to our programme to help individuals after they have left our programme to equip themselves at the facilities of Kleinplasie.”

The programme will give individuals practical skills they can use to find employment. This option is only open to individuals after they have completed their programme with Change Makers.
