Touws River preserves past

Touws River has a diverse and extremely rich cultural heritage that tells the story of who we are, where we came from and laid the foundation to where we are going.

Therefore the new Touws River Heritage and Conservation Society (THCS) was recently announced, currently operating as a sub-committee of the Touws River Tourism Association.

It is their aim to preserve and promote local heritage through nurturing a holistic celebration of their history, by creating awareness, to educate the value and importance of their local heritage, promoting these invaluable assets to the tourism industry, says Christiaan du Plessis, chairperson.

As a conservation body registered with Heritage Western Cape in accordance with the National Heritage Resources Act 1999, they serve within Touws River and surrounding areas.

THCS will be collaborating with the Breede Valley Municipality (BVM), Heritage Western Cape (HWC) and the South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA) to coordinate and monitor the identification of the area’s local heritage, encourage and facilitate the development of local structures and develop an integrated and interactive system for the management of heritage resources in and around the Touws River area.

Currently, THCS is implementing a concerted effort to establish the Touws River Heritage Route, an initiative to highlight the rich abundance of local heritage right on the doorstep of Touws River residents.

“The question we ask ourselves is how can we all benefit by promoting and highlighting the biodiversity of this unique cultural landscape. South Africa is vast and varied, both naturally and culturally biodiverse. Combined, this will create an incredible tapestry.

“Since our local heritage preservation is every resident’s responsibility, we encourage the local community to get involved by reporting destruction, vandalism, neglect and illegal alterations of heritage sites and buildings older than 60 years in the Touws River area to insure that future generations can be inspired by the legacy built, preserved and left behind by us today,” says Du Plessis.
