Body builders head to national champs

Two Worcester body builders, Trevor King and Shayden Ruiters, will represent Western Province and Worcester at the Body Building South Africa IFBBSA’s champs from 13 to 16 September at the Rustenberg Civic Centre. The winners of IFBBSA will form part of the IFBB South African team who will then compete in the World competition.

King and Ruiters, along with two other Worcesterites, Jessica van Niekerk en Daniel Mattee competed in the IFBB Western Province competition in Cape Town last weekend.

Ruiters came in second place in his division (men under 80 kg) and King won first place in his division (Men’s Muscular Physique).

King says his goal with this competition is to get his pro elite card. “It feels good to be representing the Western Province at the SA’s,” he says. “It is within the federation that I want to be in. For me to represent WP is an amazing feeling. I am not just doing it for the love of this sport but also to help and inspire others.”

“To be able to represent Western Province is a big opportunity and a huge achievement and I want to make the people of Worcester proud,” Ruiters added.

King says the biggest challenge leading up to SA’s, beside the finances, is trying to keep a stabilised and balance lifestyle. “With a newborn it is a bit challenging. But with the support of my wife and knowing that I am doing it for my daughter and family makes it all worth it,” he says.

According to Ruiters, trying to balance work, spending time with his girlfriend, meal preparation and training is a struggle. “Trying to maintain a balance can be difficult, but the support of my family, friends and girlfriend makes it easier,” he says.

According to King, the problem with the IFBB is its not having sufficient finances to support athletes. “It is easier for body builders from KZN or Gauteng to get to Rustenberg, but for us in the Western Cape who have to book flights, with cheap accommodation and meal prep, it is a bit of a financial challenge,” he says.

King says he has big expectations for the competition. “I expect to do well, but I will be fine with whatever outcome, although I do expect to get my pro elite card.”

According to Ruiters, he would also like to get his pro card in the next one to two years. “My goal is to win the BBSA IFBBSA’s in my division,” he adds.
