Western Cape Goalball League: A Qualifyer

The fourth tournament of the Western Cape Goalball League took place on Saturday at the Pioneer School for Visually Impaired in Worcester.

The four clubs that competed were Eerste River, Innovation For The Blind, Maties Parasport and Worcester Goalball Club.

Worcester and Innovation kicked off the first game of the day. It started with a team penalty after Innovation did not meet the required standards for clothing. Unfortunately the captain of Worcester Goalball Club, Ivaan Levendal, could not score.

After a good first half Worcester lead 6-3 at half-time. In the last quarter of the game Innovation took the lead. With one minute remaining, Innovation lead with 10-9 winning the game 11-9.

The second game on the schedule was between Eerste River and Maties. Due to unforeseen circumstances, Eerste River could not participate in this tournament, and for that reason they forfeited the game in favour of Maties.

This tournament was important for all participating teams, as the top three teams that end on top of the log will qualify for the Cape Winelands Goalball Challenge Trophy Tournament, which will take place between 7-9 September in Stellenbosch.

After a 15-minute break it was time for three-time champions, Worcester, to take on other former champs, Maties.

Although Worcester had good moments, they made too many mistakes and at half-time Maties led with 6-3.

With four minutes remaining, the head referee of the day, Rowan Douglas, blew the final whistle with a final score of 13-3 in favour of Maties.

With Eerste River withdrawn there was only one game left; Maties versus Innovation. It was clear from the get-go that both teams come to the court for only one reason, business, a win and nothing less. Neither Innovation nor Maties could take control of the game. The half-time score was 8-8. In the second half the fitter Maties team took control. Although Innovation came back strongly at the end, the goal difference was too big, and Maties won this game 17-13.

Worcester, LOFOB and Maties qualify for the Cape Winelands Goalball Challenge Trophy Tournament in September and will compete with teams from Free State, North West and Limpopo.

The next tournament will take place on 18 August in Stellenbosch. The teams who will play are Innovation For The Blind, LOFOB, UNISA and Worcester Goalball Club.
