Monroe Pienaar is on his way to new York.
IATS is an international company that gives people the opportunity to showcase their talent before the world.
“I came across an IATS poster in Cape Town in February,” he relates. “I took the chance and went for the audition. The audition was nerve-wrecking, but I have always wanted to dance.”
Pienaar recently came back from the second leg of auditions held in Johannesburg, where he had to perform before the likes of Nate Butler of The Voice and Expresso show.
“I was ecstatic when I received the call to tell me I was chosen to go to New York,” he said. “It was always my dream to be an international dancer and now that my dream has finally come true, I cannot believe it.
“I am grateful for the opportunity, because I wanted to go to dance school, but circumstances did not allow for that dream to come true.
“My mom and I planned to fly down to Johannesburg for the second leg of the auditions, but she passed away a month after my first audition, in March this year.
I am still broken because of the death of my mother and one thing I learnt is that I have to stay focused and do this for myself because I want to spread my wings. There is definitely a life out of Roodewal.

Pienaar started dancing at a very young age and was part of a local dance group called New Kids on the Block for nine years.
The group parted ways after completing matric in 2013 but Pienaar continued dancing on his own from then.
He participates in hip-hop dance battles in Cape Town, dances at the V&A Waterfront and the Cape Town Gardens.
Numerous events in Worcester show he is not restricted to that specific genre, he hopes to try other genres such as Tap Dancing and the Salsa.
Dancing is everything to Pienaar, especially since he danced his way out of a very dark period following his father’s murder right in front of him at the age of 11.
“I was petrified and anxious, but dancing numbed the pain,” he said.
Pienaar needs financial sponsors for his trip to New York in July 2019. Any contributions will be appreciated.
Anyone who wishes to contribute may contact him on his cellphone at 062 117 8035.
