Drama sketch teaches about TB

A drama group called MotherTongue performed a play called Lientjie se Longe at the Rawsonville Clinic on 15 February to teach members of the public about the challenges faced on a daily basis by tuberculosis (TB) patients.

“I am TB and I want to marry you,” says the TB bacteria to Lientjie’s lungs. Lientjie, on the other hand, is at risk as she not only has a boyfriend with TB, but does not live a healthy lifestyle. These are some of the lessons shared with the audience during the performance.

The drama group consists of local actors from McGregor and Worcester who, through the NGO MotherTongue, receive sponsorship from the Welcome Fund in the United Kingdom to do community theatre projects that promote prevention and treatment of TB.

The research institute SATVI (South African TB Vaccine Initiative) had previously approached the University of Cape Town Drama School’s Community Theatre Department to assist with the development of plays that explain the intricacies of TB in a humorous yet impactful way.

The performance Lientjie se Longe addresses issues such as daily challenges, poverty, healthy lifestyle and management of treatment – real issues that many TB patients face.

The performance was well received by the audience. When members of the audience were asked what they thought of the performance, the organisers were told that everyone had to see it, as it conveys much essential information.
