Guy Fawkes and Diwali celebrations resulted in an influx in stray animals admitted to the Cape of Good Hope SPCA and the organisation is urging the public to assist by adopting a forever friend.

The SPCA says in a statement it has become increasingly evident that reckless individuals are using both events to utilise fireworks in a particularly anti-social manner.

“This includes ignoring any restrictions and causing damage to property as well as terrifying communities and animals,” the statement reads.

Magnificent Malin has been through a lot. Her needs are simple: time, understanding and a willingness to work with the SPCA’s resident animal behaviourist. Malin spent most of her life tied up. Malin needs a home with older kids. She would benefit from a breed-familiar home. Malin is suited with a male dog, depending on the introductions.
Hazel was found as a stray and has not been claimed. She is boisterous, fun, energetic and ready for her daily walks and runs. Happy Hazel was posted all over social media, but sadly no-one has claimed her or offered to adopt her. Hazel is better suited to older kids and a home with no cats. She would prefer to share her home with a male of similar size or older with a calmer demeanour.
Parker was found as a stray and has not been claimed. She can be shy at first, but does warm up quickly. Parker is not suited to a home with cats. Parker is very gentle and could live with kids who will respect her space and be gentle with her too. Parker will need a secure property.
Jolly was found as a stray and has not been claimed. She is a happy dog and is thriving with her daily walks and exercise time. She has not yet met cats, but this can be arranged. Jolly is a smaller to medium-sized dog and will happily share her home with a male of equal size or larger. She is a wonderful family addition to any family looking for a cheerful dog that will conquer mountain trails with them.
Dashing Danie was found as a stray and brought into the SPCA’s care by wonderful finders. Danie will need a secure home and would love a home where he can have a dog friend. He is only about a year old, so this young man will need a home where he will receive lots of reassurance and love. Danie is a small to medium-sized dog and is a dream hiking companion.
Maggie enjoys her walks, cuddles and of course, lots of treats. Darling Maggie is a larger girl with the most playful nature. Maggie enjoys sniffing every bush and tree she can find. Maggie has not yet met cats. She would be best suited to a home without toddlers.
Cindy was found as a stray and has not been claimed. She is looking for a safe, secure and happy home. She will ideally need to be a single pet to set her up for success. She could potentially live with a larger male dog that is calm. Cindy is not compatible with cats.

The SPCA has since issued guidelines and tips on how pet owners can protect their pets in the future.

They advise pet owners to adopt the following guidelines to help protect their pets:

  • Ensure all animals have identification; preferably a micro-chip or at least with a dog tag because without identification, the task of reuniting lost pets with their owners will be that much more difficult.
  • Stay at home with your pets.
  • Bring your pets inside and give them access to a room that is safe and secure – create a small den for them with blankets, pillows and a favourite toy.
  • Try and mask any noise by drawing the curtains and playing calming music.
  • Put familiar and comforting things around them.
  • Give your pets a nutritious and balanced meal – this is likely to make them more sleepy.
  • Give them something to chew on – a chewy bone or catnip toys for cats.
  • If you suspect your pet will react badly to fireworks, please seek professional advice from your veterinarian who may prescribe a sedative to help them cope. There are also effective homeopathic remedies, such as CalmEze, available from the SPCA Vet Shops in Plumstead and Grassy Park that use natural ingredients to help keep your pet calm and relaxed.

  • Call the SPCA on 083 326 1604 to report any lost or injured animals or any incidents of animal cruelty.
