More than a million rand and a security guard’s firearm were taken by 11 armed men in a brazen robbery in the centre of Welkom on Saturday (25/05).
The money was stolen from two Fidelity security officers at their cash-in-transit vehicle on the pavement at the corner of Ryk and De Kaap Street at about 08:45.
The two security officers had collected money from Nedbank and on the way back to the armed vehicle they were approached by about 11 armed suspects who pointed an AK47-rifle at them.
The suspects ordered the driver to open the vehicle, but instead he put his hands in the air and refused to open. The suspects shot two shots, one at the left front side of the vehicle and one at a white Ford Ranger, said WO Lynda Steyn, corporate communications officer of the police’s Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation.
“One Girsan 9 mm-pistol with serial number BL00275, with an unknown number of rounds and cash amounting to R1 451 214,85 were taken,” says Steyn.
The suspects fled in a black BMW SUV vehicle with an unknown registration number plate.
“AK 47 spent cartridges and 9 mm spent cartridges were gathered as exhibits. A white Ford Ranger with registration number DXJ 935 L was abandoned and confiscated,” says Steyn.
