02 Apr.

Thank you very much for joining us for the Australian Grand Prix, be sure to stay with us on PlanetF1.com as we bring you all the best of the reaction from the paddock after the race.

02 Apr.

In any case, it's been quite a day around Albert Park, and Max Verstappen will be relieved to come away with victory after a frantic, stop-start race in Melbourne.

02 Apr.

A hat tip to McLaren for their performance today as well, going from two point-less races to a double points finish, regardless of the circumstances, is solid going. A couple of points for Zhou Guanyu will also be welcome in the Alfa Romeo garage, as well

02 Apr.

Alonso called the race a "rollercoaster of emotions", in quite an understatement for the day itself.

02 Apr.

For the podium itself, there are 11 World Championships between the three drivers on there, and the three title-holders in the field will all be spraying champagne shortly.

02 Apr.

For what it's worth, the drivers completed their cooldown lap in red flag conditions after Nico Hulkenberg broke down on the exit of Turn 2. This truly bizarre race probably couldn't have ended any other way.

02 Apr.

Sergio Perez wins the fan-voted Driver of the Day award for coming from the pit lane to P5, Lance Stroll moves up to P4, with Norris, Hulkenberg, Piastri, Zhou and Tsunoda rounding out the points.

02 Apr.

The cars cross the line and Max Verstappen wins, with Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso completing the podium. With his five-second penalty, Carlos Sainz drops all the way out of the points and down to 12th.

02 Apr.

Anyway, the race is rolling again as the Safety Car leads the cars again, but there is no overtaking allowed, so the cars should stay in order as they come across the line and complete the race.

02 Apr.

Carlos Sainz, to put it mildly, is absolutely furious about his penalty. He called it "unacceptable" over team radio and believes the FIA needed to wait to speak to him after the race. He was not happy. At all.

02 Apr.

Now the Alpine duo are under investigation over causing a collision at the restart. Both are already out of the race, but the FIA are taking a look.

02 Apr.

Carlos Sainz now has a five-second time penalty within his race time, so the cars behind him will want to be as close as possible on the line, even under yellow flag conditions. That could lead to a weird dash across the line.

02 Apr.

The race 'restart' will take place at 17:33 local time in Melbourne, so we've had the 10-minute warning before the race fully completes. What a rollercoaster.

02 Apr.

FIA statement: "Race resumption behind Safety Car in the order of the previous start minus cars out. "There will be a rolling start and as there will be only one lap left, the chequered flag will be out as they come back across the line."

02 Apr.

Well, the race will be restarted, but in order of the grid slots in which they started for the remaining drivers - so it will be Verstappen, Hamilton, Alonso, Sainz, Stroll, Perez, Norris, Hulkenberg, Piastri, Zhou, Tsunoda, Bottas.

02 Apr.

A lot of conflicting information is happening surrounding how the end of the race will finish. Haas told Nico Hulkenberg they believe a rolling restart will take place under formation lap conditions, but there is no confirmation of anything as yet.

02 Apr.

It's looking unlikely that the race will restart in anger, with a formation lap counting as a racing lap and it being the final lap of the race, though the FIA are looking at the way the end of this race will pan out.

02 Apr.

There will be some tension between Alonso and Sainz, after the Ferrari driver tagged Alonso's rear wheel, and he was on team radio immediately trying to arrange a restart like there was in Silverstone as a sector had not been passed before a red flag.

02 Apr.

Pierre Gasly locked up into Turn 1, and when he came back on track, his team-mate came right up behind him, and both Alpine drivers make contact and hit the wall! It's what we feared might happen between the two at some point, even though it looked a tota

02 Apr.

Max Versatppen leads Lewis Hamilton, but Fernando Alonso is tagged and spun around, and both Alpine drivers are in the wall at the exit of Turn 2 and the red flag is out again, and that could very well be race over.

02 Apr.

And it's lights out - and it's absolute carnage!

02 Apr.

The drivers are coming around to the grid now, and whatever happens here, the fans in attendance at Albert Park have seen one heck of a show today.

02 Apr.

Here we go! The Safety Car leads the drivers on another formation lap, with Max Verstappen leading the train of drivers.

02 Apr.

The lapped cars of Bottas, Sargeant and De Vries have been allowed to unlap themselves before the restart as well, just so there's no confusion...

02 Apr.

So, not long before the drivers have another formation lap, on a free choice of tyre, before a two-lap dash to the finish. With a standing start. If F1 wants sprint races, this is the ultimate sprint.

02 Apr.

The FIA have confirmed that "wheel rim debris over a wide area" is the cause of this red flag, so the track is being cleared as we speak, and they have confirmed the race will restart at 16:56 local time, so a 10-minute warning.

02 Apr.

With the amount of debris on track, the race has been red flagged again. This will not just leave us with a standing start after the formation lap, but a two-lap dash to the finish. Oh, my.

02 Apr.

RED FLAG!

02 Apr.

The rubber marks on the wall on the exit of Turn 2 suggest Magnussen clouted the wall, and he duly did so. The remaining cars begin to form up behind the Safety Car, and anyone feeling very risky may want to take a pit stop for soft tyres now.

02 Apr.

SAFETY CAR: Ah, we have another retirement - and it's Kevin Magnussen who's lost his right-rear tyre. He's pulled off the circuit on the inside at Turn 4.

02 Apr.

Norris finally makes it past Hulkenberg in a brilliant pass! He's able to get a run on the Haas driver on the exit of Turn 11 and dives down the inside of Turn 12 - not a usual passing place - and Hulkenberg goes out wide onto the gravel as a result. He's

02 Apr.

Verstappen is putting the hammer down again to try and re-establish the cushion he once had, taking the fastest lap in the process.

02 Apr.

Some fantastic dicing between Norris and Hulkenberg for P8, with Norris all over the back of the Haas driver - but Hulk is holding firm in his defence.

02 Apr.

Not quite all plain sailing out in front for Verstappen! He suffers front locking into the penultimate corner and goes onto the grass, good job he had an 11-second gap to fall back on becasue he'd have been in trouble if not.

02 Apr.

Fernando Alonso has been told he's good to push to the end now, and he's definitely doing so. He's dropped Carlos Sainz at a rate of knots in the past lap or two, and he's just set the fastest lap of the race...

02 Apr.

Perez has now very quickly cleared Hulkenberg after Norris proved to be a problem for him, but how high can the Red Bull climb come race's end? He's now up to P7, with a four-second gap to Stroll.

02 Apr.

Lando Norris has done a sterling job in keeping the Red Bull behind for multiple laps now, but Perez has finally managed to get the job done into Turn 9. Nico Hulkenberg a further second up the road is next for the Mexican.

02 Apr.

Pierre Gasly is still right on Sainz's tail after being passed by him earlier. We have a proper battle emerging for the podium positions heading into the closing stages.

02 Apr.

Another fastest lap from Hamilton now, who extends his gap to Alonso to 1.6s. With Sainz the same gap behind the Aston Martin, Hamilton might be trying to push Alonso into the clutches of his compatriot.

02 Apr.

Lewis Hamilton, who's been concerned about tyre life, now sets the fastest lap of the race himself. We've definitely seen this somewhere before, but he's pushing to try and keep Alonso out of DRS range behind.

02 Apr.

Elsewhere, Sergio Perez has set the fastest lap of the race as he looks to close down Lando Norris in P8. With a bit of open road in front of him, it's clear just how much pace is underneath him in that Red Bull.

02 Apr.

A bit of a train looks like it might start to emerge for P2 in this race, with Alonso and Sainz beginning to close the gap to Hamilton, with Gasly and Stroll both in DRS range behind Sainz.

02 Apr.

George Russell has just tweeted one of the understatements of the season so far: "When it's not your day, it's not your day." Difficult not to feel sorry for the Mercedes driver today, getting bad luck with the timing of the red flag before his engine f

02 Apr.

Turn 9 is one of the quickest corners on the track but it's a proper overtaking spot today! Piastri is the latest to make a pass there, with DRS helping him past Yuki Tsunoda into P11.

02 Apr.

At the front, Verstappen now has a seven-second lead over Hamilton, with Alonso a further 2.5s behind. The three World Champions in the field currently occupy the podium positions.

02 Apr.

Bold move from Esteban Ocon as well now, who goes around the outside of Piastri into Turn 9 and up to P11. Loads of action going on up and down the field.

02 Apr.

But Sainz manages to make his way past! Great aggression heading into Turn 3 from the Ferrari driver, who dummies to the outside before sending his car to the inside at the apex and dives by Gasly. He's up to P4.

02 Apr.

Carlos Sainz is probably getting fed up of the sight of Pierre Gasly's rear wing, who's doing a superb job in P4 at the moment for Alpine. The Spaniard has DRS, but the Frenchman is keeping him at bay. A bit like when they were fighting for victory at Mon

02 Apr.

And Perez now goes around the outside of Piastri to put himself into the points. The Red Bull driver definitely has the bit between his teeth now.

02 Apr.

A brave, late move from Perez down the inside of Ocon into Turn 9! He dives down the inside of his former team-mate to move into P11. Piastri and Tsunoda are in his sights next.

02 Apr.

Hamilton reports worries about Alonso's pace behind on team radio, with the Aston Martin driver now right on his tail. Hamilton is also concerned his hard tyres may not make the end.

02 Apr.

VSC conditions quickly end as the marshals extinguish the flames on Russell's car and wheel his Mercedes back into the pit lane. We're racing again - so much has happened and there are still 39 laps to go.

02 Apr.

George Russell is out! He reports an engine issue over the radio and it's clear to see as flames come out of the back of his W14. He pulls over in front of the pit exit, Virtual Safety Car conditions on track and he's out of the car safely. What a way to

02 Apr.

Now, no further action confirmed against Lewis Hamilton for the restart procedure following the red flag - falling more than 10 car lengths behind the Safety Car did not apply under these circumstances as per the sporting regulations, so he's able to carr

02 Apr.

Elsewhere, Sergio Perez is starting to make a bit of headway as he recovers from starting last - he passes Zhou into 13th.

02 Apr.

A bit of contact between Yuki Tsunoda and Oscar Piastri, as the AlphaTauri driver shuts the door on the Aussie at Turn 1 there's a bit of side-by-side touching but they're both able to carry on.

02 Apr.

Another mover is Carlos Sainz, who's moved up to P7 from P11 at the restart, and he makes a bold move on Stroll at Turn 3 into P6 - great pass from the Ferrari driver.

02 Apr.

George Russell makes his way past Gasly in the braking zone at Turn 11, around the outside of the Alpine driver with DRS enabled. He's now back up to fourth - a good recovery after the disappointment of losing the lead with the red flag.

02 Apr.

We have a new race leader - Max Verstappen sweeps his way around the outside of Lewis Hamilton on the way up to Turn 9 with DRS open and the Red Bull driver sweeps into the distance. You get the feeling he may not be seen again now...

02 Apr.

There was contact at the back at Turn 3 on the restart as Nyck de Vries leapt over the front tyre of Esteban Ocon, while George Russell made his way back up to fifth, with Lance Stroll dropping two places on the restart.

02 Apr.

Hamilton gets a flying start and Pierre Gasly leaps his way up into fourth place, but as expected, the restart procedure is now under investigation by the FIA. There could be a penalty coming the Mercedes driver's way here.

02 Apr.

Max Verstappen complains as Lewis Hamilton drops well behind the Safety Car, so this could end up being an investigation in a little bit if the FIA take a dim view of it. Anyway, the drivers now pull into their grid slots...

02 Apr.

The Safety Car heads out of the pit lane and the drivers follow as they head around Albert Park ahead of a second standing start. The drama!

02 Apr.

It's likely that most drivers will try to get to the end on the set of tyres they put on for the restart, unless people are feeling particularly brave - and plenty of fresh hard tyres are out in the pit lane now.

02 Apr.

So, your updated top 10 at the restart will be: Hamilton, Verstappen, Alonso, Stroll, Gasly, Hulkenberg, Russell, Tsunoda, Norris, Piastri. If you've missed the start of this race, you've missed quite a bit!

02 Apr.

The FIA has confirmed the race will restart at 15:33 local time, so in just under 10 minutes.

02 Apr.

"Yeah, sorry George, that's screwed us," comes the radio message from Toto Wolff. The amount of gravel strewn across the track is the reason given for the red flag after Albon's accident.

02 Apr.

With a red flag coming, there's a shake of the head from George Russell as he climbs out of his Mercedes - and understandably so. He's going to drop from P1 to P7 at the restart after pitting, and we're going to have a Hamilton, Verstappen, Alonso top thr

02 Apr.

RED FLAG: Well, now. Anyone who's pitted is going to be regretting that decision.

02 Apr.

George Russell and Carlos Sainz both dive into the pits, Hamilton and Verstappen both stay out - so we have a split of strategies in play, which Hamilton has already called a "massive disadvantage" on team radio.

02 Apr.

SAFETY CAR: Ah, that's got to sting for Alex Albon. He's gone off at Turn 7, losing the rear on entry at a 160mph corner and spinning his way into the barrier. That's going to hurt both physically and mentally from a fantastic position for Williams, but t

02 Apr.

DRS is enabled and Russell hasn't managed to break the one-second gap to Hamilton, meaning he is still right on his team-mate's tail, but Verstappen is lurking in P3...

02 Apr.

Sergio Perez is back on hard tyres after making a second pit stop behind the Safety Car - clever move from Red Bull to give the Mexican track position later, but F1's tyre management master will need all his skills today.

02 Apr.

The race restarts and Russell gets a great restart, getting the hammer down before the final corner and leaving a big gap to Hamilton and Verstappen behind. Sainz leads Alonso, and Alex Albon has made his way into the top six.

02 Apr.

Ocon, Zhou, Bottas, Perez and Sargeant have all stopped under the Safety Car. Technically, they don't need to stop again now, but it'll take a massive effort from Perez to get to the end now on mediums.

02 Apr.

Leclerc looked to make his way around the outside of Lance Stroll, who was in the middle of the Ferrari driver and team-mate Fernando Alonso, but the FIA say no further action required.

02 Apr.

SAFETY CAR: Elsewhere, Charles Leclerc is facing backwards in the gravel at Turn 3 and that's his race over. The Safety Car is out while the Ferrari is cleared away and it prompts a flurry of pit stops.

02 Apr.

Russell gets a great getaway and passes Verstappen into Turn 1 and the Red Bull driver is forced onto the defensive, and Lewis Hamilton is able to pass him into Turn 3 - making it a Mercedes 1-2!

02 Apr.

And the Australian Grand Prix is go and George Russell takes the lead!

02 Apr.

The only non-medium runners are the Alpines and Alfa Romeos on softs, with De Vries, Sargeant and Sergio Perez looking to go deep into the race on hards.

02 Apr.

Formation lap! The drivers set about warming up their tyres and it's medium tyres for most of the front-runners.

02 Apr.

It's been a while since a Red Bull was flanked by two Mercedes cars on the grid, and the drivers admitted their surprise at being there, but that doesn't matter now. Let's do this...

02 Apr.

Once the drivers navigate Turn 1, it's also the run down to the braking zone at Turn 3 on the first lap which will provide another overtaking opportunity on the first lap, but a bit of care will be needed as the track tightens.

02 Apr.

A reminder of how the top 10 on the grid will line up: Verstappen, Russell, Hamilton, Alonso, Sainz, Stroll, Leclerc, Albon, Gasly, Hulkenberg.

02 Apr.

The Australian national anthem has been played, and the countdown is on! Just 15 minutes until the formation lap.

02 Apr.

The consensus is the race will be a one-stopper today and with overtaking being tough around Albert Park, timing of that stop will be key.

02 Apr.

It was a tricky day for Oscar Piastri in qualifying, narrowly missing out on Q2 at his first home race and blaming a little bit of "inexperience" for not making the most of his session on Saturday. A run into the points from P16 would go down very well wi

02 Apr.

The FIA has slightly widened the grid boxes this weekend after Alonso and Esteban Ocon's penalties, but an unintended consequence with less space down the middle appears to be the teams having to zig-zag their way up the grid to work on the cars ahead of

02 Apr.

Plenty of unknowns heading into the race today: Can anyone keep up with Verstappen? How much can Perez recover? Who will lead the chasing pack? Will Fernando Alonso find his way onto a third straight podium? This is the fun part of the weekend where we're

02 Apr.

The pit lane is open and the drivers are making their way around to the grid in the Aussie sunshine.

02 Apr.

There were some standout laps yesterday from Alex Albon and Nico Hulkenberg in the midfield, Hulkenberg being disappointed to not replicate his Q2 lap but Albon setting the fastest middle sector of anyone on his way to a P8 starting slot.

02 Apr.

George Russell and Lewis Hamilton took P2 and P3 on the grid respectively for their best session of the season at Mercedes, and they were thrilled at the way the car performed.

02 Apr.

If you missed any of qualifying yesterday, Max Verstappen took pole, but his team-mate locked up on his first flying lap and went into the gravel, meaning Sergio Perez went out in Q1 - but he and Valtteri Bottas will start from the pit lane today.

02 Apr.

Good afternoon and welcome to the Albert Park circuit, home of the Australian Grand Prix.

01 Apr.

Verstappen tops Q1 from Hamilton, but Perez, Bottas, Sargeant, Zhou and Piastri are eliminated, a huge shame for Piastri at his first home race.

01 Apr.

Norris does his part as he shoots up to P12, Piastri is doing a very, very slow out-lap ahead of this final push to make Q2.

01 Apr.

Bottas, Piastri, Norris and Sargeant need better times if they are to avoid joining Perez in elimination. Less than two minutes remain.

01 Apr.

Alonso hooks a lap up this time, purple in the first and third sectors, that was until Verstappen finds another chunk of time and re-establishes a three-tenth buffer.

01 Apr.

It is P4 for Hamilton who has six-tenths to make up on Verstappen. P2 for Albon, only 0.08s slower than Verstappen and two-tenths faster than Sainz! This on the same soft compound tyre as well.

01 Apr.

And it is straight into P1 for Verstappen, three-tenths up on Hulkenberg. Alonso goes a full second slower than Verstappen's benchmark.

01 Apr.

So, as Perez gets a scooter lift back to the Red Bull garage, the action out on the track resumes.

01 Apr.

The session will resume in three minutes.

01 Apr.

As the crane takes that stricken Red Bull away, Perez follows on foot with his head down. A very dejected driver indeed.

01 Apr.

It is Turn 3 again then that bites Perez, and this time it is a bite which he cannot recover from. "The same *bleep* issue again," he tells the Red Bull team.

01 Apr.

Red flag! And yes, it is Perez in the gravel. That has wrecked Verstappen's flying lap and is game over for Perez on an awful day for him.

01 Apr.

Hulkenberg now sets a 1:18.373, going over half a second faster than Albon as the track ramps up.

01 Apr.

Now those five teams have pulled the trigger. Alex Albon is on top early for Williams, while his team-mate Logan Sargeant has spun at the penultimate corner. He recovers and returns to the pits.

01 Apr.

Red Bull, Ferrari, Mercedes, Aston Martin and Alpine are holding fire at this stage rather than heading out for the early rush.

01 Apr.

It is the soft slick tyre chosen to tackle a track that at this stage is dry.

01 Apr.

And there is the green light. It is qualifying time here at Albert Park! Unsurprisingly, it is quite the queue at the end of the pit lane which disperses onto the track.

01 Apr.

The drizzle has eased off, but the radar shows an area of rain moving in, so expect a mad dash at the start of Q1 to get a time on the board, which means a huge amount of traffic! So, that will be easier said than done.

01 Apr.

And Perez's weekend threatens to get even worse as Red Bull are once again hard at work on his RB19 which is currently in bits. Only eight minutes now until Q1 starts.

01 Apr.

This could well be a fierce battle for a spot on the front row of the grid, six-tenths having covered the top eight in FP3, and just two-tenths from Alpine's Esteban Ocon in P3 to Lewis Hamilton in P8.

01 Apr.

We know that Verstappen excels in the wet just like he does the dry, but these conditions could well bring the likes of Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso into the pole hunt, and certainly ramp up the chances of drama.

01 Apr.

Well, the rain arrived at the end of FP3, and it has returned now in the build-up to Q1. We may well start with a greasy, tricky track out there. Just heard a huge gulp from Perez's side of the garage!

01 Apr.

Max Verstappen heads into qualifying with the momentum after topping the final practice session, but on the other side of the garage, Sergio Perez goes into Q1 underprepared after a delayed entry into that session, and after that, he could barely keep the

Hello and welcome back to Melbourne. We have all the build-up to qualifying coming your way with the light set to go green on Q1 in 30 minutes. All times are local.

01 Apr.

A blunt "I know" from Norris when told his lap was P13-worthy only tells a clear story of the frustration at McLaren, that team nowhere near as competitive as they want to be.

01 Apr.

But on the track, Hulkenberg continues to look mighty as he claims P4 in this session behind Verstappen, Alonso and Sainz. Ocon, Tsunoda, Norris, Magnussen and De Vries are out.

01 Apr.

That was an extreme level of chill from a bird which barely even flinches while crossing the road as Verstappen arrives on the scene! Some mighty reactions from Verstappen saves it.

01 Apr.

Just a couple of minutes left, this scrap for Q3 is tight, really tight!

01 Apr.

Norris goes into the top 10 at Albon's expense, but he proceeds to drop the Brit back out.

01 Apr.

Albon interestingly set his current P10 time on scrubbed softs, so now he heads out on a fresh set to see what more he can unlock from the Williams.

01 Apr.

Alonso attends the same school it seems, he moves within a tenth of Verstappen. Norris meanwhile has had an off through the gravel, and just to rub salt in the wound, he has that lap deleted for track limits at Turn 3.

01 Apr.

Verstappen then decides it is time to school the field once more, creating a three-tenths buffer out front.

01 Apr.

By 0.05s Leclerc now takes over P1.

01 Apr.

Alonso sets the early benchmark of a 1:17.681, a couple of tenths up on his best Q1 run. Stroll goes marginally quicker than his team-mate.

01 Apr.

Q2 time folks!

Well, race days have been a story of dominance for Red Bull so far, but Mercedes have put themselves in prime position to trouble Verstappen in pursuit of Red Bull's first win here since 2011, and his first Albert Park victory period. Make sure to join us

01 Apr.

Sainz, Stroll, Leclerc, Albon, Gasly and Hulkenberg will complete the top 10 on Sunday's grid.

01 Apr.

But, hello there Mercedes! Front row for Russell, two-tenths down on Verstappen, while Hamilton will head row two ahead of Alonso.

01 Apr.

Fair play to Verstappen for giving us hope right until the very end, he is on pole for the Australian Grand Prix.

01 Apr.

Hamilton and Hulkenberg are rather getting in each other's way, all while Verstappen finds half a second!

01 Apr.

Leclerc goes purple in Sector 3, and yet only a tenth slower than Verstappen, all that earns him is P5 as it stands.

01 Apr.

The skies have definitely darkened, but we may just get one more round of pole efforts in here.

01 Apr.

"Downshifts are getting worse," Verstappen complains, plus battery issues for the Championship leader. Less than a tenth covers the top four of Verstappen, Hamilton, Alonso and Russell. Stroll goes P7, yet he is only three-tenths off the pace.

01 Apr.

A better effort from Verstappen and it is good enough to put him back on provisional pole, but only by 0.009s from Hamilton. "Rain in four minutes," say Ferrari, but can it stay away, please? This is a thrilling Q3!

01 Apr.

Now Hamilton provisional pole!

01 Apr.

Provisional pole for Alonso, but Verstappen it seems has a lot of time left on the table.

01 Apr.

Not the cleanest lap that Verstappen will deliver, but it is still a 1:17.578, far from a shabby time to beat.

01 Apr.

Ah, interesting, Ferrari expect rain in the last "three to four minutes" of this session. That is why all the drivers have made a dart for the track then, complete with rapid out-laps. Only Stroll is still in the garage.

01 Apr.

Here we go for Q3. Who will claim pole for the Australian Grand Prix?

31 Mrt.

Lewis Hamilton was able to split the two Red Bulls before the session finished, but it was Max Verstappen who was the driver to beat once again at the end of FP1. We'll be back a little later on for FP2 - do join us!

31 Mrt.

On-board footage from Sargeant sounds like his Williams suffered a power shutdown altogether, and Race Control confirms the session will not be resumed.

31 Mrt.

Ah, bad news for Logan Sargeant, who pulls to the side of the track at Turn 11. His Williams seems to have shut off and that brings out the red flag again - and the likely end of the session.

31 Mrt.

A spin for Max Verstappen - an unusual sight! He runs wide on the apex at Turn 4, then suffers oversteer as he puts the hammer down on exit and his car faces backwards as a result. He's able to get going again, albeit with four very flat-spotted tyres.

31 Mrt.

Lando Norris, making up for lost time earlier in the session, sets a purple first sector and puts his McLaren P6 in FP1. Not too shabby at all from the Briton, with the team having struggled in the opening two races this season.

31 Mrt.

Drivers are now heading back out again, a longer delay than perhaps anticipated but we're back for the final 14 minutes of the session.

31 Mrt.

Back to green, not to worry - everything seems to be in order once again.

31 Mrt.

Red flag! The GPS system for the teams has failed, causing a safety concern, and the drivers are coming back around to the pit lane.

31 Mrt.

Now Kevin Magnussen clips the gravel at the edge of Turn 10. The drivers are testing the limits now, but they all now Albert Park can bite if they get anything wrong.

31 Mrt.

Yuki Tsunoda has taken his AlphaTauri for a spot of lawnmowing at Turn 1, sliding off under braking and bouncing across the gravel. He was very lucky not to hit the wall there.

31 Mrt.

BIG slide for Perez under braking at Turn 3. He wound up for a fast lap on softs and that Red Bull did not want to turn in for him, fighting the steering as he narrowly avoided the gravel.

31 Mrt.

Soft tyres are bolted on for more of the drivers now, and Charles Leclerc puts himself third, though he's almost six tenths behind Verstappen at the front.

31 Mrt.

Lando Norris emerges! He's setting his first flying lap of the session now as the team had been working on his McLaren previously.

31 Mrt.

A 1:18.790 is the new benchmark from Verstappen, still running on the softs - around a second shy of the 1:17.868 time which put Charles Leclerc on pole last year.

31 Mrt.

Alex Albon puts himself P4, 0.488s off Verstappen's pace-setting time and the exact same lap time as Stroll in third. He's looked handy in that Williams so far, with Lando Norris in the McLaren being the only driver we've not seen yet.

31 Mrt.

A reminder that after trialling it last year, a fourth DRS zone is being used on this circuit - between Turns 8 and 9. Drivers raised safety concerns last season with it coming on a left-hand kink, so we'll see how it works this time.

31 Mrt.

Sergio Perez now goes marginally quicker than his Red Bull team-mate to top the timesheets early in the session, with Lance Stroll, Pierre Gasly and Alex Albon currently rounding out the top five.

31 Mrt.

We have a Haas in the gravel at Turn 3, but Kevin Magnussen is able to crawl his way out of trouble after a snap of oversteer and locking his rear tyres on entry. No yellow flags necessary.

31 Mrt.

Max Verstappen goes fastest on a 1:19.332, 0.965s faster than Lewis Hamilton in P3, though Verstappen is the only driver running on soft tyres at the moment.

31 Mrt.

A reminder that the track layout at Albert Park was changed a fair bit last year, increasing lap speed significantly. Corner entries have been widened at certain corners and the former chicane has been removed, meadning lap times are a fair bit quicker th

31 Mrt.

First flying laps are starting to come in, with the 1:20.267 from Sergio Perez being a full second faster than team-mate Max Verstappen, and everyone else for that matter.

31 Mrt.

Some things to look out for already this weekend, with six of the 10 teams adding upgrades to their car - including a new front wing for Red Bull - with Aston Martin, Mercedes and Ferrari not bringing anything with them.

31 Mrt.

A flurry of cars have come out for installation laps straight away, led by the Ferrari of Carlos Sainz. Hometown boy Piastri completes a practice start on the pit exit and is met by a flurry of applause as he heads around Albert Park for the very first ti

31 Mrt.

Green light! FP1 is go at Albert Park.

31 Mrt.

It'll be a debut home race for Oscar Piastri this weekend, who is actually racing in cars in Australia for the first time, having gone through the junior categories in Europe. He also revealed this week he was once a grid kid for Daniil Kvyat at Albert Pa

31 Mrt.

G'day! (Sorry, couldn't resist). Not long now until FP1 for the Australian Grand Prix, which will get underway at 12.30pm local time.

31 Mrt.

Thank you very much for joining our live coverage of FP2, we'll be back tomorrow for FP3 and qualifying and don't forget to keep an eye on PlanetF1.com in the meantime as we cover all the latest news from the paddock this weekend.

31 Mrt.

Chequered flag is out and after a dry session became wetter, it's Fernando Alonso that ends the day on top. He's followed by Charles Leclerc, Max Verstappen, George Russell and Carlos Sainz in the top five - and if the same result happens come Sunday, we'

31 Mrt.

Heading into the final few minutes, we wouldn't expect a change in the order any time soon but the drivers are gaining valuable track time in wet conditions which could be of use later, with Piastri heading onto the 12th lap of a stint on inters.

31 Mrt.

Lewis Hamilton reports the "white lines are slippery" on track, referring to the road markings on which Albert Park races. He suffers a big snap of oversteer at Turn 3, but several drivers are looking at getting some wet laps under their belts now.

31 Mrt.

Lance Stroll locks his right-front tyre in the braking zone at Turn 3 and goes into the gravel, but he takes his foot off the brake and is able to move through it and not get stuck.

31 Mrt.

Visible spray behind the drivers now as they go around Albert Park, but Logan Sargeant is out of his car completely without having set a time in this session, so bad news for the Williams driver there.

31 Mrt.

A few more drivers are trying inters now as the rain does not appear to be stopping for now, so while times won't improve, if rain continues this weekend, this could be valuable for the drivers. Oscar Piastri is going for his first wet laps as a Formula 1

31 Mrt.

Unfortunately the rain is putting us into slight 'thumb-twiddling' territory without cars going around, with Pierre Gasly trying a sighter on intermediates himself.

31 Mrt.

Carlos Sainz is the first to come out brave a lap on soft tyres on a slippery surface, while George Russell comes out on intermediates and immediately feeds that back to the Mercedes pit wall.

31 Mrt.

With the drivers remaining in their garages as they wait for the rain to pass, A reminder that Alonso tops the session ahead of Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen.

31 Mrt.

Nobody is on track at the moment, and Lewis Hamilton's mechanics are working hard on his W14 on what appears to be a suspension adjustment.

31 Mrt.

Alpine confirmed they were going to keep running with Esteban Ocon as they expect the rain to stop, though at Turn 1, where the rain has hit, Lando Norris took to the grass after losing grip.

31 Mrt.

A 1:21.2 is the time from Kevin Magnussn, the slowest of the completed laps as he keeps well away from the kerbs as rain drops keep coming. Probably the safe thing to do, in the circumstances.

31 Mrt.

"Traffic is horrendous" is the word from Sergio Perez, just as rain has started to fall - so if it gets harder, the drivers may opt to come in sooner rather than later to avoid taking risks.

31 Mrt.

A bit of argy-bargy between Max Verstappen and Carlos Sainz on track as they work out who's meant to go first into Turn 11. Both complain about the other, but they eventually carry on their merry way.

31 Mrt.

Elsewhere, the strong wind into Turn 1 isn't helping Verstappen, who suffered a snap of oversteer on his way into the corner. He took to the grass as a way out, and he was able to carry on.

31 Mrt.

A 1:18.887 from Fernando Alonso on medium tyres almost matches Max Verstappen's effort from FP1, and puts him fastest for now after the first flying laps.

31 Mrt.

The track is extremely busy, with only the Williams drivers still in their garage at this moment in time.

31 Mrt.

The weather forecast doesn't look fully dry for this session either, so it makes sense for the drivers to get out there early if they want to avoid any rain that may be on the way.

31 Mrt.

Green light! FP2 is underway, and the drivers get out there straight away. That's what we like to see.

31 Mrt.

As ever with FP2, we'll probably get a clearer idea of qualifying and long-run pace from the drivers and teams as the session progresses. With FP1 and support series racing having taken place as well, track evolution should also be a factor here.

31 Mrt.

It wasn't all plain sailing for the drivers in FP1, testing the limits of the Albert Park layout and resulting in a few spins. Max Verstappen was one of them, but he steered clear of the barriers and topped the session nonetheless.

31 Mrt.

Welcome to our live text coverage for FP2 for the Australian Grand Prix! The next session is due to start at 16:00 local time at Albert Park.

01 Apr.

Right, that looks like the end of the drama, so we should be safe to wrap it up here. Make sure to join us soon for qualifying though, as this promises to be one you do not want to miss. Q1 gets underway at 1600 local time.

01 Apr.

It is session over but the action isn't, Sainz has slid into the gravel just making his way back to the pits on an increasingly wet track. Luckily he avoided an embarrassing shunt. Ocon meanwhile has his foot stuck on the accelerator. He managed to coast

01 Apr.

The stewards are having a look at home hero Oscar Piastri for a potential infringement, it seems like he did not do his practice start from the first available grid slot.

01 Apr.

And that is session over. Perez fancied a practice start, but even that went wrong as the clock hit zero. So, as Red Bull wheel his car back to the garage, the sister Red Bull has set the pace with Verstappen at the wheel. Alonso and Ocon complete the top

01 Apr.

Now the rain is really starting to come down, and take a guess which driver has just gone off...If you said Perez, then correct. No harm done though, he keeps the car out of the wall and will now trundle back to the pits.

01 Apr.

It is starting to drizzle out there now with four minutes of the session to go.

01 Apr.

Almost Sergio! He made it all the way to the penultimate corner before going off over the grass. That lap is getting closer to completion.

01 Apr.

Verstappen now on the soft rubber settles back into his familiar P1 spot with a 1:17.565, while Alonso goes P2. P3 for Ocon and Gasly P4. We apparently have yellow flags in Sector 1, but there is no sign of any, and drivers are not holding back in that fi

01 Apr.

And talk about hero to zero in a split second for Zhou. He shoots up to P5, then at Turn 2 goes over the grass and spins. Luckily he avoids major contact with the barrier, finds reverse gear and continues on his way.

01 Apr.

No such joys at McLaren though, it is session over for Norris due to a clutch problem. He did not get to move onto the soft tyre so this is far from ideal ahead of qualifying.

01 Apr.

Mercedes now are really stepping on the gas. Hamilton moves to within only 0.011s of Sainz's ultimate pace, while Russell improves to P3 with just under two-tenths to find on his team-mate.

01 Apr.

Better this time from Perez, as it is just a lock-up at Turn 3 to ruin another attempt. "A loose rear" at Turn 1 and then "a lot of front lock at Turn 3" are his complaints as he asks Red Bull to check the car.

01 Apr.

A decent effort from Russell who pops up to P4, but he says those soft tyres are not "biting, on both axels".

01 Apr.

So we are back to green, but now Perez has had a trip over the gravel at Turn 3, he will get a push lap in eventually! Nyck de Vries meanwhile has been identified as the debris-depositing driver. It looks like a piece of the engine cover fell off the Alph

01 Apr.

It was Leclerc then who reported the debris at Turn 9, but we wait to see which car discarded it.

Red flag. There is some debris out on the track, it looks like someone has had a major brush with the wall.

A shoutout for Lando Norris in the McLaren, only four-tenths off Verstappen's best time right now with the pair having both set their respective times on the medium compound.

01 Apr.

Alex Albon is going well out there for Williams, his latest lap on the softs though was ruined by the yellow flags as Kevin Magnussen heads over the grass at the penultimate corner. P7 it remains for Albon and Magnussen stops the VF-23 before the wall.

And that is lap over for Perez, Hulkenberg did not even know he was there it seemed, dawdling on the racing line and then cutting across and nearly collecting the Red Bull driver. The stewards may take a look at that one.

01 Apr.

More than 20 minutes of the session gone and Red Bull finally now have Perez out there as he sets off on a push lap with the soft tyre. Alpine are looking strong too as Pierre Gasly moves into P3, four-tenths off the pace.

Russell wants Mercedes to check the ride height on his W14, he is complaining of bottoming in the car.

Looks like there is a bit of rain roaming around the area, it remains to be seen whether those clouds will reach the track.

Purple for Alonso in the first sector on his latest lap, but that is good enough for P2 only as Sainz returns to top spot, now armed with the soft rubber. He has a two-tenth buffer over his compatriot.

Leclerc shaves another 0.04s off his time, while Hamilton is now picking up the pace and gets within six-tenths of the Ferrari driver.

It is looking nice and tight at the top, how we wish it could stay that way. Leclerc down to Stroll in P3 are split by just 0.057s, with Alonso only 0.159s off the ultimate pace.

01 Apr.

A tricky start for the Mercedes pair. Lewis Hamilton and George Russell both armed with the soft rubber, but Hamilton is over a second off the pace after that attempt, while Russell came across Stroll and had to call that lap off. Leclerc now takes over P

01 Apr.

Verstappen returns to P1 with a two-tenth buffer over Sainz. Sergio Perez is not in the cockpit yet as Red Bull continue to work on his RB19.

01 Apr.

Verstappen beats Sainz to pipping Magnussen, but a trio of purple sectors sees Sainz go six-tenths faster on that lap. It was soft versus medium tyre there for Sainz and Verstappen. Charles Leclerc slots into P2.

Haas' Kevin Magnussen lays down a 1:20.935 on the medium tyre which Carlos Sainz in the Ferrari is now hunting down on the softs.

The Ferraris and Aston Martins waste no time in heading out, two teams likely scrapping for that 'best of the rest' spot again this weekend, but with an eye on Red Bull to possibly upset their pole plans.

Red Bull's Championship leader Max Verstappen topped FP1 on Friday before Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso took over that P1 spot after the second session. So, can either of them take the momentum into qualifying as the FP3 pace-setter, or will a different
