Paarl and P’berg share spoils

Piketberg Cricket Club issued a warning to Paarl in its friendly encounter at the Parys Cricket Grounds (PCG) last Saturday, when they shared the honours in the two T20 matches played. These two teams will clash at the PCG in the opening fixture of Boland’s Premier League competition on Saturday 30 October.

In the first match Paarl posted 132/9 thanks to an aggressive knock from debutant George Freeman (50, 2x4, 4x6) in 42 balls. The 19-year-old Englishman cleared the boundary four times in the same over, to give an instant boost to the home team’s total. Opener Robyn Andrews (36, 4x4, 1x6) also showed a welcome return to form after a long lay-off, which bodes well for the coming season.

Although Piketberg’s Vivian de Wee (3-0-8-2) and Gerschwin Brink (4-0-16-2) boasted the best bowling figures, it was the lanky pace bowler Samrique Kayster, who kept the home batsmen on their toes during his spell.

The hard hitting John van der Merwe (43, 1x4, 3x6) was the star with the bat for the visitors. He was mainly responsible for taking his team to 133/7 to secure a three wicket victory. In the absence of several Paarl all-rounders (through regional matches and injury), it was left to the youngsters, and especially the experienced left-arm seamer Kyle Solomon (4-2-4-2) to contain the onslaught, ably assisted by another debutant, the 17-year-old left-arm paceman Zeal Jackson (3-0-30-2), who showed plenty of promise.

Paarl (154/4) again elected to bat first in the second match and showed far more determination in setting a more competitive target, especially Andrews (85, 5x4, 4x6) with his impressive strike rate of 130. Morné de Vries (28, 2x4) also went at a run a ball with some hard running between the wickets. Kayster (3-0-16-2) again impressed with pace and bounce. Ronnie Ockhuys (40, 1x4, 5x6) laid into Paarl’s Cullen Heugh with five sixes in one over, taking only 15 balls to get a struggling Piketberg team back on track.

Brink (28 in 20 balls, 1x4, 2x6) provided excellent support, but Paarl’s spinners came to the rescue with impressive performances. Off-break bowler Edrique Cook (4-0-16-2) maintained an excellent line and length with the new ball, while the other debutant, the 19-year-old Englishman Max Loup (4-0-18-3), kept up the pressure, which resulted in the visitors requiring 29 to win off the last 2 overs. This proved to be too much against the pace of Solomon and Jackson, although the visitors (148/7) did well to lose by only 6 runs.
