The Masakhane Hub is found in the middle of the Masakhane community, alongside the Masakhane soccer field and the Good Hope ECD.
This site became the home of the Overstrand Disaster Management Covid Relief programme in April 2020, which began as a collaboration of municipal, private and NGO programmes to serve the community at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic and lockdown.
Since then the Masakhane Hub has become a hub where many community members receive nutritious meals, prepared either on the big outdoor fire or in the well-equipped container kitchen. This is also a place where they engage with one another, catch up on the latest Covid-19 protocols and news and check in with the Grootbos Foundation team.
Overstrand Disaster Management gradually wound down its involvement from the collaborative effort in September 2020. Grootbos Foundation, however, continues to run a Covid relief programme from this site and to serve the greater Gansbaai community.
The Masakhane Hub continues to adapt to serve the needs of the community, at the request of the community. A flourishing labyrinth vegetable and herb garden was established and the soup kitchen team loves to pick fresh produce from the garden to add straight into the big cooking pots – a great example of nutrients going directly from the earth to the plate.
“The Classroom” container was also established to provide a safe haven where children can complete their homework and gain free internet access for projects, research, and tertiary applications.
The centre is also home to the Good Hope ECD and the i-MED vision and iMED africa health-e-centre. Here the i-MED Africa team educates parents and caregivers about the treatment and prevention of early childhood diseases and everyday ailments through natural home remedies using plants and herbs grown in the garden.
The Good Hope ECD is a well-run Early Childhood Development centre where children play, learn and grow in the care of trained facilitators. This ECD is run by a Masakhane community-based management committee and staff who serve the youngest community members, giving children the best beginning in life.
Grootbos Foundation thanks the Overstrand Municipality, Disaster Management, iMed Vision and iMed Africa, RTL Wir Helfen Kindern, donors, volunteers, local businesses and individuals who helped develop the Masakhane Hub, saying: “Without you, Grootbos Foundation would not be able to provide ongoing support to our local communities. It is wonderful to see how the seeds sown in Masakhane have grown into a hub of flourishing activity and hope.”
