Motorists are warned of road closures in Milnerton near to the Refinery Interchange where construction work on the N7 highway and Plattekloof Road-bridge are currently underway.
Roadworks in the area to upgrade the Refinery Interchange have been ongoing for more than a year now.
In a statement issued by the Western Cape Department of Transport and Public Works on Wednesday it said that as part of the upgrade, the bridge on Plattekloof Road over the N7 and the N7 carriageways between Refinery and Potsdam Interchanges will be closed to traffic between 19:00 on Friday 9 December and 05:00 on Monday 12 December. The reason for this is to allow the existing bridge to be safely demolished, said spokesperson Jandre Bakker.
The N7 northbound on- and off-ramps, and the southbound on-ramp, will remain open to traffic, Bakker says.
“This section of Plattekloof Road is currently heavily congested because the dual carriageway narrows to a single carriageway on the bridge over the N7 and the Malmesbury railway-line. The construction of the two new road-over-road bridges is underway for eastbound and westbound traffic, and the westbound road-over-rail bridge is being widened,” said Bakker.
He says traffic accommodation measures will be in place to enable motorists to safely move around construction works. Motorists are also advised to use alternative routes where possible, as traffic delays may occur.
The upgrade project is expected to be complete by February 2024.
