Gang fights in Bultfontein have claimed the lives of two men, and led to the arrest of 12 gangsters for murder and other related crimes.
On 27 September, a member of a gang called BTK (Born To Kill) was attacked and killed by a rival gang called The Portuguese.
Four suspects were arrested. During a revenge attack members of BTK killed a Portuguese gang member. One suspect was arrested. The five suspects appeared in the Bultfontein Magistrate’s Court on 28 September on charges of murder. They were refused bail and the case was postponed for further investigation.
On the same day of the court case, members of Welkom Public Order Policing (POP) Reaction Team were called to intervene as members of these gangs again attacked one another.
They arrested seven suspects aged between 17 and 29 for possession of dangerous weapons, attempted murder, Assault GBH and for malicious damage to property.
The SAPS confiscated a large quantity of knives, including homemade weapons, axes, spears and knobkirries. The Acting District Commissioner of Lejweleputswa, Brig. Mzondi Mojafi applauded the POP reaction team for their work.
