In memory of Benjamin Theunissen, who lost his battle against his congenital heart defect (CHD) last year, the SANBS will host a CHD awareness drive on Saturday (16/10).
The event will take place at the Foreigner Motorcycle Club in Kroonstad from 12:00 to 15:00.
Benjamin was born with CHD and underwent three open-heart surgEries in his short life of 21 months. He needed blood after each surgery.
In the wake of his last surgery, he received platelets and whole blood for a duration of 13 days as he fought for his life on an extracorporeal membrane oxygenation machine.
His family initiated the awareness drive to give patients like Benjamin the gift of life.
Members of the public are invited to support the initiative by donating blood. In this way, Benjamin’s legacy will last forever through the gift that keeps on giving.
To become a blood donor, people must:
- be between the ages of 16 and 75 years;
- weigh 50 kg or more;
- be in good health;
- lead a healthy lifestyle;
- consider their blood safe for transfusion to a patient; and
- commit to donating blood regularly.
