
The Genesis Chess Club hosted its first open chess tournament on Saturday 4 February.
The tournament was attended by 60 players from local chess clubs, primary and high schools. The tournament consisted out of three sections – Open section over-1 000 rating; Open section under-1 000 rating and Open section under-500 rating. Lucky Mdingi, Genesis Chess Club player, gave one of the biggest upsets of the tournament.
He entered the tournament and had a ranking position of 17th. Mdingi ended the tournament by finishing third in the over-1 000 section. Louis Havenga was the strongest player of the tournament and ended first overall in the tournament.
Players that were part of the over 1 000 section described it as one of the most intense chess tournaments they had ever participated in in recent years on the West Coast. The winners of the various sections were: Open section rating over 1 000: Louis Havenga (first), Jacques Basson (second) and Lucky Mdingi (third). Open Section under-1 000 rating: Rozaan Galant (first), Cleverton Davids (second) and Noble Andrew (third). Open section under-500 rating: Heinrich Koegelenberg (first), Ewout Oosthuizen (second) and Christopher Mouton (third).
